style.float?

Today I want to change the CSS float property of the inline style of an element programatically using style.float. I found that it has no effect. By alerting the innerHTML property, I found that the inline style is not set at all!

After googling, I found that since float is a reserved word in JavaScript/ECMAScript, one need to use style.cssFloat. And Internet Explorer, unsurprisingly, requires one to use style.styleFloat instead.

Anyway, problem solved. :-)

fgetcsv() sucks because it doesn't handle quoted newlines. So I wrote a simple CSV parser class for PHP myself, based on the JavaScript version that I wrote earlier (it doesn't handle quoted newlines either). Not prefect (e.g. newlines are standardized to \n, and string matching works only for ASCII or UTF-8), but does what I want it to do.

Currently I'm working on a website that uses Flash on one of its pages. As you should already know, ActiveX interaction is disabled in Internet Explorer because of the Eolas issues. You can read more about this in the Activating ActiveX Controls article published in MSDN.

Since I want to write in valid HTML only, the HTML code should be written as something like this:

This works perfectly on anything but IE. In order to make IE happy, we have to add an extra param element:

Now IE knows where the movie is and loads it properly. But the ActiveX control is disabled from user interaction. So a little JScript is needed here.

By googling, I came up with this informative blog post: Flash interaction disabled in Internet Explorer. The solution by David Merrilees is almost perfect. The idea is to remove the data attribute not recognized by IE, recreate the whole object element using outerHTML, and using CSS to prevent flickering.

But he is missing one important thing: what about user with JScript disabled, CSS enabled and Flash plugin installed and enabled? They will see nothing because the visibility is set to hidden initially.

So, instead of hiding the objects for all IE users, what about hiding the objects for all IE users with JScript enabled? While ideally we should use DOM method to modify the HTML content, we can't do so here as it will be already too later if we hide the Flash movie until window.onload. Fortunately, we can use document.write to output stylesheet that hide the objects before the document is loaded:

While I personally hate using document.write, it is OK here as IE only supports HTML (specifically (X)HTML served as text/html).

So the rest is almost identical to David Merrilees's solution, except that I've used display: none instead of visibility: hidden as I found it not working for me.

Conditional comment is used so that only IE will run this JScript (activex_fix.js). Be sure that it is included inside the head element, not the body element.

This idea should also work for Opera 9, which follows IE's decision to disable user interaction with plugin content. I didn't bother to deal with it as it is not required by the client. :-P

The Google Trend is just cool. It shows the trend of the keyword in Google. And what's more is that it lets us to compare the trends of multiple keywords, somehow like Google Fight (but better). For example, a search of "internet explorer" vs "firefox" clearly shows us who the winner is:

A more search showing more browsers (notice that Google Trend only shows a maximum of 5 keywords.). Basically Safari, Opera and Konqueror are so low and close, making them inseparable from each other. In order to see more clearly what happens on the ground level, we have to keep just these 3 browsers.

The new Yahoo Widget Engine installer for Windows just sucks! It crushes like no tomorrow. And I'm not alone, see these bunch of frustrated users:

Even after manual cleaning of the Registry, it still crushes. But for me, the SDK version works. So if you have lost YWE like me, you may like to install with the SDK installer for this moment. I can't guarantee that it will install properly on your system through. Also, the SDK installer is a 12MB monster (24.7 times of the size of the normal installer which is only 561KB).

Thunderbird 1.5 is out, finally

3 weeks after the release of Thunderbird 1.5 RC2, the final 1.5 release is finally out today! There are no official/unoffical announcements yet. I got this new from Wikipedia (What the…). Anyway, time to upgrade your email client. I tried auto-updating from 1.5 RC2 and no updates was found. So I assume that 1.5 final is identical to 1.5 RC2, right?

因為最近不時編寫中文短訊的關係，所以多用了筆劃輸入法。使用至今，終於在誤打誤撞之後「破解」了不少難拆的字。現在我想在此跟大家分享一下。

難拆字淺談

令我囧了的聖誔禮物

今天我們公司為了慶祝聖誔，到了灣仔的「有骨氣」吃火鍋。食物都不錯的，但可惜我喉嚨不適﹝因為傷風的關係﹞，再加上昨天又在家吃火鍋，希望我的喉嚨痛不會更嚴重就好了……

吃過飯後，就是交換禮物。過程沒什麼問題，但上巴士後，我把禮物拆開，我囧了：竟然是用一個大大的粉紅色心形盒子裝著的三隻玻璃小天使！（⊙＿⊙；）……~~我想這應該是香水啦。~~不是香水啦，只是裝飾……

這裡我不便透露是誰啦，不過能告訴你：送的人不是我的同事，所以不用想歪了。<(￣3￣)>

P.S. 我媽媽問我有沒有女同學可以轉送，但這個禮物未免太過囧吧？

Anyone know where I can get some really nice gingerbreads (薑餅)? I need the one with strong ginger flavor (夠薑). The cheap ones are often tasteless. I remember that there was a good store in Tsim Sha Tsui, but are there any good ones in Causeway Bay? I just don't want to travel so far just for a few ginerbreads.

My everlasting tag soup

I found that one of my tag soup HTML documents created in the early days is still being served in my secondary school website. It was a Computer Application assignment – a map showing the school. View the source code and you'll see my name in the meta element.

How embarrassing! See all those presentation attributes and elements. I even specified a Chinese font that doesn't come with the OS (華康少女文字W6)! Come on… someone got to hack in the server and remove this ugly file.

P.S. Apparently someone edited the file with Microsoft FrontPage 4.0 when the school was moved (from Sheung Wan to Tin Shui Wei), and the last modification date is 2001/10/9 08:56:10.

噚日影完畢業相過，去左銅鑼灣買野。行到公司對面街﹝百德新街﹞時，有一個女郎突然間殺過黎，打開心口……前既一個包包，拎出一罐「Red Bull」，仲立即開左佢畀我家姐。之後仲同我地解釋Red Bull有乜好。咁佢收尾仲畀多罐我添，咁我見佢咁辛苦，咪要左佢囉。

不過一飲落口，真係好難飲下，好似藥水味。應該比士多啤梨味既藥水好少少既，不過結果我地都係飲左幾啖就掉左囉。

P.S. 因為個promotion girl殺得咁突然，我都未睇清佢個樣同著乜衫添。如果想知既就唔好意思啦，自己去百德新街睇下仲會唔會有下一輪啦。不過我家姐話個cost都幾貴，每罐要十幾蚊架。

In the old-school HTML, one can set the initial value of an ordered list as follow:

Today, the 7-year old bug 1156 is finally fixed. I guess it is probably the oldest bug that got fixed?

P.S. By fixing it, one can drop the optional type attribute of the HTML object element. A nice fix. Really. :-)

Say NO to Bug 303806!

With the patch made in bug 303806, the Winstripe theme in the latest nightlies now looks more inline with Windows' Luna theme. However, a undesired side effect is that the new theme now look horrible if you are using Windows' Classic theme.

Sign the petition now if you are Firefox user who uses Windows 9x, 2000/NT, or XP (with Classic theme).

In the worse case, one can still use this userChrome.css which restores the original Classic-friendly Winstripe theme.

The IEBlog has just released the new logo for Internet Explorer 7. Surprisingly, the logo reminded me of the splash screen shown when starting the legendary browser, Netscape Communicator:

Firefox (for Windows)-specific file upload problem

I was writing a simple PHP script for handling file upload. I found that some files that I uploaded with Firefox are 0 bytes in size (it should be non-zero). Since I developed it under a Chinese (simpified) Windows, I found this problem rather ridicious: I can't upload a file named with certain simpified Chinese characters!

Let's illustrate with the following example:

  Create a dummy file with dummy content.
  Rename it so that it contains the character 达, e.g. 高达 (Gundam).
  Upload them using a HTML form (encoded in UTF-8).


The result in PHP (by using print_r $_FILES;):

See? The character 达 was replaced with a underscore _, and the file size is zero. The file upload was success since the error codes are 0s.

Obviously Firefox can't find the file (can't resolved the path?), so it uploads nothing to the server. I guess it is another time to file a bug in the famous bugzilla database. ;-)

Edited: it seems that the bug was already filed by someone else.

Edited again: anyway, I filed the bug, although it seems that no one noticed yet. :-(



Wow! Mozilla "Corporation"

With over 10% usage share, Mozilla is now a quite profitable business. Mozilla Corporation, a subsidiary wholly owned by Mozilla Foundation, is just created today with the aim to gather cash for supporting the wonderful Mozilla project (well, according to my understanding).

CSS absolute positioning pop quiz

Given a html element with a min-width of 1000px, and an absolutely positioned block that sticks with the top right corner, what would it be positioned when the inner width of the window is less than 1000px (e.g. resizing the window, reducing the screen resolution, etc)?


  The block should sticks with the html element.

I found that only Mozilla chooses the first option, which is what I wanted. Other browsers (IE, Opera, Konqueror) choose the second option. While I think Mozilla is the only right one, I'd file a bug in bugzilla if it is actually wrong.

P.S. I use the expression hack to emulate min-width in IE.

Space equally using CSS

Thanks to Lachy's discovery, I can now space table columns equally with CSS. Simply apply table-layout: fixed to the table element (or element with display: table or display: inline-table). Columns with no width specified will be spaced equally, no matter how long or short their contents are. And surprisingly, this works in Internet Explorer as well.

The "release candidate" for Deer Park Alpha 2 is out. One of the most visible improvements is the enabling of the Fastback feature, which allows much faster page forwarding and backwarding like that in Opera. That's really exciting!

P.S. Please uninstall Alpha 1 before installing this build. I found that it seems to be ignoring the Alpha 1 that I previously installed, hence, extra shortcuts and extra uninstallation entry. :-(

My new phone

OK, besides my new toy, I got a new phone as well. It's Nokia 3230 (I'm used to Nokia). I still can't connect it with the computer yet (the infra-red of the notebook doesn't seem to be responsing and I don't have any bluetooth/cable connector…), so I can't get back the photos that I taken, and can't use the phone as a MP3 player yet :-P.



My new toy

I bought a LinkStation (250GB) yesterday. It's cool. I've centralized some of my data to this server, hence they are accessible from any machine within my LAN.

I tried to setup the FTP but no success. I can set up the FTP as anonymous FTP, but it is not accessible from the WWW (it said possible PASV port theft). If I set it up as restricted FTP (require LinkStation user login), the server is even not accessible (connection refused). I wonder what's wrong with it, or is it just me? :-S



My vCard

I just created my vCard, so that one can easily add me to his/her address book. Add me as your (email) contact if you are interested.

Since it was created by using just a text editor, I'm not sure if all syntax is correct. But at least it can used correctly by the Windows Address Book.

P.S. As a side note, "vCard syndicating" should be a cool feature for email clients like Thunderbird (since it got RSS/Atom syndicating already).



Google in XHTML

Google finally made a XHTML interface (send as application/xhtml+xml!) for its search service. It's a much cleaner interface intended for mobile devices. But I think even desktop users should give it a try! ;-)

Google indexed my true XHTML site

Today, I found that Google has successful (to some extends) indexed my "cutting-edge" XHTML site:

Why "to some extends"? Because:

It fails to recognize "application/xhtml+xml" as XML
Hence it doesn't use UTF-8 as the default encoding, leading in problem displaying Chinese characters
Also, it doesn't recognize my custom entities (defined with inline DTD), hence showing somethings like &site.title;


Anyway, it seems to be better than nothing. Let's hope that Google will improve its file parser someday…

Konqueror passed Acid2

First Safari, then iCab, and now Konqueror. I guess Opera will be the fourth browser to pass the Acid2 test, since Mozilla developers don't seem to be interested in passing it. I'm quite sure that Firefox will pass it sooner or later (perhaps Gecko 1.9?), but it is not the top priority.

Internet Explorer? Forget it.



CC "hijacks" the Firefox searchbar

The Creative Commons has received a number of angry responses that said CC "hijacked" their Firefox searchbar. This is, of course, due to insufficient understanding of the browser. CC has created a page to explain the "problem", which isn't really a problem in the first place...

Some people are just too stupid...
